One of the many great things about the Chevy Silverado 1500 is its fantastic towing ability. When properly equipped, it can tow up to 13,300 pounds. That “when properly equipped” part is crucial, as not all models have this capability. It’s never a good idea to tow more than your vehicle is engineered for, and here, Lester Glenn Chevrolet goes over what you need to know about towing safety.

Pay Attention to Tow Ratings
If you plan to put your truck to work and avoid overloading it, you must pay close attention to two numbers. The first is the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), the maximum weight the vehicle is rated for. It includes occupants, fuel, upfit components, and payload.

The second number is the Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR), which consists of the vehicle’s GVWR and trailering capability. Remember that your payload and towing contribute to this number, so you shouldn’t max out both your towing and payload capabilities simultaneously. Generally, you can find these numbers on the driver’s door jamb or in the owner’s manual.

What Happens if You Overload?
Those ratings are not suggestions; they are a hard limit on what your vehicle can safely carry and tow. Exceeding them will strain the engine, transmission, braking system, suspension, tires, axles, and frame – even if they’ve been upgraded and even if you have a tow package. This could result in a significant repair or replacement, so knowing before you tow lets you stay well within your vehicle’s capabilities and safety limits, protecting it and you.
